Best Pre-Treatment Checklist to Minimize Bruising Before Injectables and Lasers

Why Bruising Happens and How We Prevent It

Bruising after injectables like Botox, dermal fillers, or laser treatments can be frustrating, especially when you’re looking forward to showing off refreshed skin. The good news: most bruising is preventable with proper preparation. We’ve guided thousands of patients through the DFW area on exactly how to prepare, and the difference between those who follow pre-treatment protocols and those who don’t is striking.

At MedRein Health & Aesthetics in Southlake, we believe that great results start before you walk through our doors. That’s why we’ve developed this comprehensive pre-treatment checklist to help you minimize bruising and get the most from your aesthetic investment.

When we administer injectables or laser treatments, we’re working with delicate blood vessels just below the skin’s surface. A needle or laser energy can cause these vessels to leak slightly, creating the purple and yellow discoloration we call bruising. Some bruising is completely normal and expected, but excessive bruising usually stems from blood that’s too thin or vessels that are more fragile than they should be.

The reality is that bruising severity depends on several factors we can actually control: your medications, supplements, hydration level, and alcohol consumption in the days leading up to your appointment. We can’t eliminate bruising entirely, nor would we want to, since it shows the treatment is working. But we absolutely can reduce its intensity and duration by addressing these modifiable factors.

Think of bruising prevention like preparing for a surgery, except our goal is minimal downtime and maximum confidence. When you follow our guidelines, most patients experience light bruising that fades within 3-5 days rather than dark bruising lasting 1-2 weeks.

Medications to Avoid Before Your Appointment

Certain prescription medications thin your blood, making bruising more likely. If you’re currently taking any of these, we’ll discuss timing with you during your consultation, but here’s what to know:

Blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin), dabigatran (Pradaxa), and rivaroxaban (Xarelto) require special consideration. You shouldn’t stop these on your own, as they’re often prescribed for serious conditions like atrial fibrillation. Instead, we’ll coordinate with your prescribing physician about whether a brief pause is safe before your appointment.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are the biggest culprits. These are over-the-counter, which makes them easy to overlook, but they significantly increase bleeding. We ask patients to stop NSAIDs at least 5-7 days before injectables or laser treatments.

Corticosteroids in high doses can affect how your body heals, though regular doses prescribed for conditions like asthma are generally fine. Let us know what you’re taking during your intake appointment.

If you take daily aspirin for heart health, don’t stop without checking with your cardiologist. We can often work around low-dose aspirin, but high-dose regimens may need adjustment. The key is transparency: bring a complete medication list to your consultation so we can review everything together.

Supplements and Herbal Remedies to Discontinue

This is where many patients get tripped up, because supplements feel “natural” and harmless. That’s not always true when it comes to bruising. Several popular supplements thin the blood or interfere with clotting:

Vitamin E in doses over 400 IU daily can act as a blood thinner. Most people don’t need extra vitamin E beyond what’s in their diet, so stop any supplemental vitamin E at least 5 days before your appointment.

Fish oil and omega-3 supplements have mild anticoagulant properties. Stop these 3-5 days prior.

Garlic supplements and fresh garlic in large quantities can increase bleeding risk. Normal culinary amounts are fine; we’re talking about concentrated garlic pills.

Ginger, ginkgo biloba, and turmeric are all blood thinners. If you’re taking these for joint health or memory support, pause them at least 3-5 days before treatment.

St. John’s Wort can interfere with how your body processes medications, so stop it 2 weeks before your appointment if possible.

Arnica is actually one exception worth mentioning. Despite common belief, arnica before treatment doesn’t meaningfully prevent bruising. However, taking arnica after treatment may help speed bruising resolution, so we often recommend it as part of your post-care plan.

The safest approach: bring all your supplements to your consultation. We’ll review each one and tell you exactly which to pause and when.

Alcohol and Hydration Protocol

Alcohol dehydrates you and thins your blood, making bruising much worse. We recommend stopping alcohol completely for at least 48 hours before your appointment and ideally 72 hours if you have sensitive skin or are prone to bruising.

Hydration works in the opposite direction. Well-hydrated skin is more resilient and heals faster. Start drinking extra water 3-4 days before your appointment, aiming for at least 3 liters daily. Proper hydration plumps your skin, stabilizes blood vessels, and helps your body manage any minor bleeding more efficiently.

The night before your treatment, have a big glass of water before bed and another when you wake up. Skip your coffee if possible, or at least limit it to one small cup, since caffeine is a mild diuretic. We know that sounds tough, but it genuinely makes a difference.

On the day of your appointment, arrive hydrated but not overfull. Drink water 1-2 hours before your appointment so you’re settled by the time you arrive.

Timeline for Stopping Blood Thinners Safely

Here’s a practical timeline so you know exactly when to pause what:

7-10 days before: Stop all NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin) and vitamin E supplements.

5-7 days before: Discontinue fish oil, omega-3s, garlic supplements, ginger, ginkgo biloba, and turmeric.

3-5 days before: Pause St. John’s Wort if you’re taking it.

48-72 hours before: Eliminate alcohol completely.

Day before and day of: Maximize hydration. Stop caffeine if possible.

If you’re on a prescription blood thinner, contact your prescribing physician 2 weeks before your scheduled appointment to discuss whether a brief pause is safe. Never stop a prescription medication on your own.

On the morning of your appointment, take all your regular medications as prescribed unless we’ve specifically instructed otherwise. Only pause the supplements and over-the-counter medications listed above.

Day-of Preparation at MedRein Health

When you arrive at our Southlake location or our other DFW area offices, you’re already ahead of the game if you’ve followed our pre-treatment guidelines. But there are still a few things we do that morning to optimize your results.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won’t rub against your face or treated areas. Avoid wearing makeup or sunscreen to your appointment, as we’ll cleanse your skin thoroughly before treatment anyway. This ensures we’re working with clean skin and can see exactly where treatment is needed.

Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment. Low blood sugar can make you feel faint and may increase bruising, so we never treat patients on an empty stomach. A banana, toast, or small protein snack is perfect.

Avoid touching your face or any area you’re planning to treat. Your hands carry bacteria, and any small cuts or irritation increase bruising risk. If you use a razor the morning of injectables, be extra gentle around your lips and cheeks.

Arrive 10-15 minutes early so you’re not rushed. Stress and cortisol elevation can actually increase bleeding, so give yourself time to relax in our waiting area.

Our Physician-Supervised Pre-Treatment Assessment

Before we perform any injectable or laser treatment, we conduct a detailed consultation. This isn’t just paperwork, and it’s not rushed. As a physician-led practice, we take time to assess your individual bruising risk.

We’ll ask about your personal and family history of bruising or bleeding disorders. Some people are naturally prone to bruising due to genetics or underlying conditions like von Willebrand disease, and that matters. We’ll review your complete medication and supplement list one more time, making sure nothing slipped through the cracks.

We’ll also assess your skin type, skin condition, and any previous reactions you’ve had to treatments. Patients with thin or very fair skin sometimes bruise more easily, and we adjust our technique accordingly. If you’ve had treatments before, we’ll ask how you healed and whether you experienced excessive bruising. That history helps us set realistic expectations.

If you’re nervous about bruising because of a big event coming up, tell us. We can adjust the timing of treatments or recommend alternatives like Fotona laser treatments, which typically involve minimal to no bruising compared to injectables.

Post-Treatment Care to Reduce Bruising Severity

What you do after leaving our clinic matters just as much as what you do before. Even with perfect pre-treatment preparation, post-care determines how quickly bruising fades.

For the first 24 hours after treatment, apply ice to the treated area for 15 minutes every hour. This constricts blood vessels and prevents blood from leaking further. After 24 hours, switch to gentle heat if you have bruising, as warmth improves circulation and helps your body reabsorb the blood.

Resume your arnica supplement if you didn’t take it before treatment. Take it as directed on the bottle for at least 5-7 days. Add a silicone-based concealer or color-correcting concealer to your kit if you need to camouflage bruising for work or social events.

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and anything that increases blood flow for at least 48 hours. This includes heavy lifting, running, and intense yoga. Light walking is fine and actually beneficial for circulation.

Continue drinking extra water for 3-5 days after treatment. Sleep with your head elevated on extra pillows if possible, as gravity contributes to fluid pooling and bruising.

Don’t take NSAIDs or any blood thinners for at least 48 hours after treatment, even if you have soreness. You can use acetaminophen (Tylenol) if you need pain relief.

When to Contact Our Team About Excessive Bruising

Most bruising is normal and expected, especially after injectables. But there are situations where you should reach out to us:

Excessive swelling or bruising beyond what we discussed at your consultation warrants a call. Severe bruising that doesn’t improve by day 5-7 is unusual and we want to know about it.

Numbness or tingling that lasts more than a few hours could indicate a nerve was affected. Contact us immediately.

Signs of infection like increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever after 48 hours mean you need medical attention. Call us right away.

Severe pain that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter acetaminophen is not normal. Let us know.

Vision changes or eye discomfort after any facial treatment requires immediate contact.

You can reach our Southlake clinic at 214-702-5225. We’re available Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, and we check messages regularly. Don’t hesitate to call if something doesn’t feel right. It’s better to check in than worry at home.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What medications and supplements should I stop before coming in for injectables or laser treatments?

We recommend stopping blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen at least 3-5 days before your appointment, along with supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and arnica. Certain prescription medications like warfarin require closer coordination with us, so please bring a complete list of everything you’re taking to your pre-treatment consultation. Our team will review your specific medications during your appointment to create a personalized preparation plan that keeps you safe.

How much alcohol should I avoid before my treatment, and why does hydration matter?

We ask our patients to eliminate alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before their appointment since it thins the blood and increases bruising risk. Staying well-hydrated in the days leading up to your visit actually strengthens your skin’s resilience and helps minimize bruising, so we encourage drinking plenty of water starting several days before you come see us. Proper hydration also improves your treatment results across both injectables and laser services.

What should I do on the day of my appointment to prepare?

We want you arriving with clean skin free of makeup, sunscreen, and skincare products so our team can properly assess your skin and treatment areas. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the areas we’ll be treating, and plan to have someone available if you’re undergoing more extensive procedures. Our physician will conduct a final pre-treatment assessment when you arrive to ensure you’re fully prepared and to answer any last-minute questions you might have.
