Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation, that should only be performed by a skin professional (esthetician, dermatologist, etc.). It takes off all baby (vellus) hairs as well as a layer of dead skin cells to reveal glowing, smooth skin.
What are the benefits of dermaplaning?
- Immediate results
- Increases product absorption
- Quick treatment
- Younger looking skin
- Promotes collagen production
- Makeup goes on smoother
- Triggers cell regeneration
- Prevents breakouts
- Suits all skin types
Dermaplaning is a form of physical exfoliation, using a surgical blade. It removes surface debris, vellus hairs, and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, which then reveals more radiant, healthy skin! We usually use this form of exfoliation as an add on to a Hydrafacial or even a chemical peel to enhance the absorbtion and results of the peel. The exfoliation and removal of the hair leaves you with smoother skin which in turns can reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles and fine lines. Most clients report that their makeup goes on easier and looks much better after receiving a dermaplane.
How often should I get a dermaplane?
We recommend getting a dermaplane once a month for best results! Your body naturally replaces skin cells every month, so this ensures that the old cells are removed in order to have the new, healthy skin cells visible. This has immediate results so you’ll be able to enjoy it as soon as the treatment is over! It’s always nice to add a Hydrafacial into the monthly routine to boost your skin health.
What to avoid after dermaplaning?
- Sun exposure
- Extreme heat
- Harsh exfoliating scrubs
- Chlorine (swimming pools)
- Makeup
Your skin is going to be a bit more sensitive after recieving a dermaplane treatment. For the first few days you’ll want to steer clear of any type of exfoliates, chemical and physical, as well as sun exposure and excessive heat exposure. You can apply makeup after about a day, but the longer you can go the better. Chlorine should be avoided for the first few days as well because it is extremely drying for the fresh skin. You’ll want to be sure to apply serums, moisturizer and of course SPF!!
What to expect during a dermaplane treatment?
Here at Medrein Health & Aesthetics, all our facial treatments (microneedling, hydrafacial, chemical peels, and of course dermaplaning) is done by a licensed aesthetician. She’ll start any facial with a double cleanse, first with an oil based and then with a water based, to ensure all makeup or other debris is cleaned off of the skin. She would then use a toner to prep the skin. After that she would begin the actual dermaplaning! Once done, she’ll apply some serums, a moisturizer, and lastly an SPF before you leave. The process will be a little different if you’re getting dermaplaning as an add on treatment to a Hydrafacial or chemical peel. You can check out our other blogs to see the process for those treatments though!
