Microneedling is an aesthetic treatment that has many wonderful benefits. There are different enhancements that we can add on to this procedure to make it specific to the needs of each of our clients. I’m going to walk you through the process.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is an aesthetic procedure that uses small, sterile needles to poke the skin. The purpose of this is to create micro-wounds in the skin which then allows the body to generate new collagen and skin tissue! This helps smooth, tone, and firm! Microneedling is usually done on the face but can be done anywhere on the body as well as the scalp to promote hair growth. You’ll want to get multiple sessions for best results! This treatment is minimally invasive and requires little to no downtime.
How do I know Microneedling is right for me?
Anyone who is wanting to reduce fine lines/wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and/or dark spots/hyperpigmentation is a good candidate! Microneedling is safe for nearly everybody who is in overall good health. The only contradictions would be anyone on certain acne medications (like Accutane), those with severe psoriasis/eczema, tendency to keloid, or those with active acne due to the possible spread of bacteria.
What are the Benefits of Microneedling?
There are many benefits when it comes to microneedling. It can reduce the appearance of scars (even acne scars), stretch marks, fine lines/wrinkles, hyperpigmentation/dark spots. It can also smooth out uneven skin tones, improves elasticity in the skin, and can even promote hair growth for people who suffer from alopecia. Microneedling is also a great preventative treatment to help younger clients maintain a healthy glow while stimulating collagen.
Aftercare for Microneedling
Your skin is more sensitive and has many micro-punctures in it after a microneedling treatment so it’s best to keep things simple and clean. You’ll want to avoid sun exposure, makeup, sweating, and harsh skincare products such as retinols and other chemical exfoliants for about a week. On the other hand, you’ll want to stay hydrated, use a cooling mask or serum, and use gentle products to keep the treated area clean.
How do you Prepare for Microneedling?
You’ll want to discontinue the use of any blood thinning medications (must be approved by your doctor first if it is a prescribed med) at least a few days to a week in advance. You’ll also want to discontinue use of ‘active’ products such as retinols and other chemical exfoliants that make your skin more sensitive. I recommend stopping the use of these topical products at least 4-5 days before your treatment and starting back up after about a week post-treatment. Stay hydrated leading up to your treatment and while healing from treatment as well.
What to Expect During & After Microneedling?
I’m going to now walk you through the process of how we do microneedling here at Medrein Health & Aesthetics. First, we’ll cleanse the area and then apply topical numbing. You’ll numb for about 15-20 minutes. We then use our microneedling pen to treat the area, discomfort is minimal due to being numbed beforehand. This then gets microneedled into the skin to help promote more collagen growth. After the treatment, you can expect pinpoint bleeding, redness, and slight irritation. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun so you’ll want to stay on top of applying sunscreen to keep your skin protected. You’ll want to get a series of treatments to obtain and maintain the best possible results.
